Citational Graphologies, or A Show of Hands

A simposio exhibit

A mural mélange of manual scripts. A mass commingling of quotes and quips. A pseudo-empirical query, posed therethrough: What might your handwriting reveal about you?

The handwritten quotations and citational jottings of over a hundred different participants in this open-to-all simposio exhibit encourage consideration of, on the one hand, the curiously captivating aesthetic of gathered handwritings and, on the other, the particular personality quirks that might lie hidden behind them. The simple reading assignment accompanying this simposio is a brief encyclopedic — or rather, Wikipedic — account of the allegedly pseudoscientific underpinnings of graphology.

Additional visual buttressing for this exhibit is provided by Lars Kremer, whose mixed-media drawings of variable geographies merge the cartographic with the culinary, the nationalistic with the jocular, the political with the palatable, and the compositional with the comic while deploying handwriting for both message and ornament, as both expressive décor and essential ingredient.

We hope you feel enticed to come see, read, consider and, perhaps, salivate over the writing, quite literally, on the wall.

Opening reception: Friday, 24 September 2010, 6-10pm.
