Marksmen and the Palimpsests
An interstizio exhibit
Comprising two entirely new bodies of work produced specifically for this exhibit, as well as a polyptych of polysemous collaborative pieces conceived as the exhibit’s theme and aesthetic took shape, Marksmen and the Palimpsests aims to showcase the most recent yields of the rigorously process-laden and precision-driven studio practices, creative visions and critical cross-examinations of John Avelluto and Josh Willis. At once a celebration and an acute investigation of these painters’ similarly discerning methodologies and the readily differentiable innovations resulting therefrom, Marksmen and the Palimpsests shall be quite literally, indeed eponymously, an exploration of the variable palpability of exactitude, on the one hand, and layering, on the other.
This exhibit is accompanied by a full-color catalogue designed by Karilyn Johanesen. It features curatorial and critical essays by Paul D'Agostino, Alice Lynn McMichael and Steve Weintraub, as well as complete sets of photographs for all three bodies of work and a selection of supporting images.
Opening reception: 5 November 2010, 6-10pm.
Closing party: 17 December 2010, 7-10pm.
The closing party will feature a couple additional exhibitional, collaborative layerings: screenings of "Intimate Machine," a film of filmic overlays by Shona Masarin, with a soundtrack by Andrew Hurst (2010, super 8mm & 16mm, color, variable duration); and informal artist talks with Avelluto, Willis, Masarin and Hurst.
Afterparties held at The Narrows, located just a few blocks away at 1037 Flushing Avenue.
